You know you are a true Siberian Husky owner when..

Only a Siberian Husky owner will understand these things

My top 12 observations, do you agree, have I missed anything?

You know when you are a true Siberian Husky owner when…….

  1. You have come to accept that you will lose one of your shoes! Siberian Huskies LOVE shoes!
I love the smell of your shoes Dad!!

2. You accept you are not going to have a perfectly landscaped garden and will continually find holes in random places around your garden.

Oh No!!! She caught me digging!

3. You find yourself having conversations with your Siberian Husky and they seem to talk back to you. Huskies don’t often bark but they do make plenty of noise in other ways! Some adorably vocal Huskies here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iA0HY2dQWFU

4. It is no longer unusual to give your eagerly waiting Siberian Husky ice cubes from your drink. Our husky loves to crunch them loudly!

5. You no longer jump when you are ‘Nose Nudged’ continually. You can not help but respond. A nudge means I want to play!

Play time with Raphael

6. You accept that having a husky is a bit like having a toddler, they follow you everywhere, inquisitive to see what you are doing. It is a constant game of follow the leader. Our Siberian Husky likes to keep us in view all the time.

What are they doing?

7. You realise that high fencing is ESSENTIAL to stop a ‘Houdini’ style escape. Huskies are very determined and usually successful escape artists. Now your garden is beginning to look like Fort Knox!

Fencing to keep me in!

8. Your home is continually full of dog hairs and you soon accept it will get worse when they shed their coat.

Just Chilling!

9. You stop wearing anything black, it is so much easier to wear pale clothes that don’t show the dog hairs!

Relaxing my head!

10. “Walkies” means that actually your Siberian Husky is taking YOU for a walk! At least you get lots of exercise.

11. You see it as absolutely normal to observe your Siberian Husky having extreme running races, at breakneck speed, crazy style with no apparent finish line!

Chargeeeeeee!!!

12. You notice your arm muscles are developing nicely as a result of all the ‘pull playing’ and ‘tug of war’ games you play with your Siberian Husky!

Playing

Siberian Huskies are adorable, friendly and extremely intelligent but are somewhat independent and stubborn. They absolutely love human company, but need firm gentle training. We love our Haley Husky to bits and would not be without her. Do you have a Siberian Husky? If you do you will be able to relate to all of the above, I’m sure.

Daily Prompt – Music

Thanks to Krista Stevens for this Challenge👍

“Music is like a dream. One that I cannot hear.”

Ludwig van Beethoven

“My creativity is my power.”

Sally Currie performing as The Dyr Sister

The two quotes above relate to the post you are now about to read. Let me explain a little.

I have four children, the eldest two are still living in England. Sally the eldest is hearing impaired and has been from birth and wears hearing aids in both ears. From an early age she received regular speech therapy as she suffers from high tone deafness, meaning she cannot hear the beginnings and ends of words. I refuse to refer to her as disabled as in my eyes she is not.

By the age of seven and in mainstream education she showed a desire to take music lessons, she auditioned to play the violin and was accepted, much to my surprise. Fast forward through her school years and she diligently studied and passed every single level of music exam available. By then she had moved onto her beloved viola. She joined our hometown Philharmonic Orchestra and travelled with the Youth Orchestra abroad.

Music is her life but she was sensible enough to realise that she needed a career to run alongside her musical interests. She trained hard for seven years and qualified as an accountant which is now her current ‘day’ job. She has always been ambitious and creative but knows that musicians have to work very hard to make a decent living.

Just recently two other talented musicians have joined her and have formed a band. Sally is always composing, writing, singing and performing live concerts usually playing a variety of instruments. She has recently won a commission to write music for a video, has played on the radio and has made several albums. She refers to herself as a contemporary folk artist and I have seen her perform many times. I am super proud of her (as any mother would be) and just like Beethoven, hearing impairment has never held her back in any area of her life.

Sally and I

If you are interested to find out more about her then I have added links below.

Sally has come along way and her loss of hearing has for some reason been an asset to her and has never held her back. She will go far whatever she does in her musical future.

Siberian Huskies – What you need to know before buying/adopting one

Our son named our Siberian Husky Haley, after Eminem’s (American rapper) daughter. Haley’s Hungarian name was Helium but we changed it at our son’s request. We have owned her for 2 years and have had an incredibly steep learning curve finding out how to give her (and us) the best life possible. It was not all plain sailing and at one point had serious doubts that we had done the right thing. Now through much trial and error life has become incredibly harmonious between us and our mischievous Haley.

This is MY chair!

I have put together a list of things that should be taken into consideration when homing a husky. I hope it helps anyone trying to decide if a husky is the perfect dog to introduce into your home.

I have added some photos at the end of this list of Haley our mischievous Siberian Husky.

10 things to consider before getting a Husky

  1. Huskies are pack animals. Huskies are pack animals, they like companionship but that does not mean to say you need to buy more than one dog. Your husky will consider you and your family as their pack. They love lots of interaction and will follow you around everywhere. Huskies are not ideal for people who work all day and need to leave the home for many hours. They will cry and howl and likely become destructive and destroy your home.
  2. Huskies need LOTS of exercise. We are lucky and have a huge garden for Haley to charge around and burn off her energy. First thing in the morning she can be seen doing circuits of the garden galloping along so hard the ground vibrates. If you not so fortunate with your outdoor space you will need to take your Husky out walking for at least 2 hours a day, they are extremely high energy active dogs due to their hunting nature and exceptional endurance.
  3. Walkies. It is a wise rule to never let your Husky off their lead when you are out walking. Huskies are stubborn and have terrible recall skills however hard you whistle or call. Huskies also have a strong predatory nature and will chase almost anything that moves. We discovered this in our garden when the lizards come out to sunbath or the little field mice venture from their hiding holes Haley goes crazy trying to catch them, they are mostly quicker than her hiding until she gives up the chase.
  4. Husky Companions. Although other dogs can live very well with Huskies, smaller pets or animals like chickens, cats, mice, birds are usually a bad combination. Even if your chickens live outside your dog will never leave them alone and try everything possible to catch them.
  5. Who is the Alpha? Huskies like to know who the boss is, called the ‘Alpha’. In our family dad is the ‘Alpha’ and his alternating voice tones tell Haley when she has doing right or wrong. It’s a good idea to eliminate bad behavior as soon as it appears. When a husky is bored they will get up to mischief if you do not take control immediately. We NEVER strike her as she has learnt through voice commands if she has done wrong.
  6. Chewing. Huskies love to chew and they will chew anything. Experts seem to agree that this is due to boredom. The solution is to either train your husky not to chew or to provide plenty of toys for them to chew on. Haley as a puppy chewed almost every shoe in the house, chairs and cushions and seemed to have a fascination with socks. We invested in some indoor chew toys for her which she now exclusively chews. As she spends most of her time outside it is not much of a problem as she has lots of bones and squeaky toys to play with.
  7. Security measures. Before homing a husky you need to make sure your outside space is totally enclosed and fully secure. Huskies are extremely agile and have strong back legs enabling them to clear 6ft fences. They are also expert diggers so you MUST ensure the bottom of the fences are impassable to your husky. Haly has escaped a few times which meant we had to raise all our fencing to over 6 feet high. It has to be said they are not escaping because they don’t love you it’s just they are inquisitive, adventurous and very independent.
  8. Howling. Huskies are very vocal, but unusually for a dog they do not bark very often. Instead they howl, or wine and make funny noises as if they are talking to you. Mostly it’s their form of communicating with other dogs or just people in general. We have several mobile food vans coming through our village playing various songs, Haley starts her howling when she hears them, quite funny really. We always know when the vans are coming!
  9. Coat shedding. Huskies have incredibly thick coats that they shed twice a year, unlike other dog breeds that shed year-round. This is called “blowing” their undercoat in the spring and can take 3 to 5 weeks. This can prove to be a nuisance as there are dog hairs EVERYWHERE! Brushing your husky outside helps a lot. In the summer, Haley’s topcoat helps keep her cool. Whilst in the cold weather, her thick double coat does a great job keeping her warm. Huskies can adapt to most climates but in hot weather you need to have adequate shade and continual water available. Haley loves chewing ice cubes in the hot summer months!
  10. Expert Diggers. If you are a gardener with pristine borders and beautiful flowers a husky is probably not a good addition to the family. Huskies are EXPERT and inconsiderate diggers with no regard to your precious garden. Haley digs daily, usually to bury bones or just to make a big hole. Many a time I have de-weeded and tilled a flower bed only to find my nice soft soil in a heap 2 foot away and glaring deep hole! I have taken to fencing off my flower beds but when “mum’s away Haley will play”!
Meeting new friends whilst out walking

We love Haley dearly and through much perseverance and patience have now got a very smart, funny and loving husky. She is a GREAT addition to our home in the Hungarian countryside. We would not be without her.

Eric

This is Eric, my husband, my rock, my soulmate. After meeting him online eighteen years ago, living with him in Canada, then marrying him in England we now live together with our son in Hungary.

Originally from Beirut, Lebanon, a man who can boast he can speak nine different languages. A useful asset when it comes to travelling far and wide as I am only fluent in English! His Hungarian is far more advanced than mine and I rely on him a lot for translating.

He is a wonderful chef making my life very easy when it comes to cooking. We BBQ regularly eating sumptuous meals whatever the weather throws at us outside in our new veranda.

Life was not kind to him and he suffered an Aortic Dissection eighteen months ago. He had life saving surgery and through the expertise of all the Hungarian medical staff that treated him, he made it through the lengthy operation. His recovery has been slow and added to that he is struggling with his increasing weight. His doctor has put him on a strict diet, which is not much fun when he loves food so much. I am there helping and supporting him all the way, through the tough times to encourage him to reach his target weight.

Sue

Hungary 2020
Hungary 2023

Hello, this is me, the author of this blog, born in England, mother of four beautiful children and granny of one.

I met my wonderful Lebanese husband Eric nearly eighteen years ago whilst chatting on the internet. We were blessed with the birth of our son, Raphael, despite my age, being considered as an older mum at age forty three.

I have lived in England, Canada and now settled in Hungary. I have travelled to many different countries in the world but now, as I get older prefer the familiarity and comforts of our home in Hungary.

I am an avid photographer, taking photographs daily, write continuously in journals, online and now writing a memoir, detailing my past adventures in Canada. I read lots of books, love gardening and appreciate every single day with a passion.

Last year I suffered from Pancreatitis, a disease in which my pancreas became so inflamed I had to have life saving surgery. Thankfully, through the diligent work of the hospital staff here in Hungary I am recovering well. Dramatic lifestyle changes were needed including abstinence from alcohol. I am happy and proud to say I am still sober to this day.

Raphael

This is our youngest son, Raphael, although we call him Raffi. He made the move with us to Hungary whilst his older siblings stayed in England.

Perhaps a little harder for him to integrate into the lifestyle we are leading here as he had to leave his friends behind in England. He frequently says “Thank goodness I have the internet,” his tagline “No Internet No Life”! Raphael is passionate about online gaming and hopes to be a games developer in the future. He is also an excellent artist, in particular pencil drawings.

Of course he also has a big part to play looking after Haley.

Within the family Raphael is a true asset to us, helping around the home wherever he can, we shall certainly miss him when he eventually leaves to pursue his career.

Haley Husky

Haley our Two Year Old Husky

When we arrived in Hungary our son, Raphael, begged us to get a dog, specifically a Husky. Living in England we were limited on outdoor space so a dog was out of the question. My reasoning had always been, when we move and get a big garden we can have a dog.

Of course now here we had to keep our promise. I decided to do some research on pedigree breeds available in Hungary and found to my dismay that they were way out of our price range. I searched online for private sellers, and was nearly conned by a dubious man, wanting us to send money upfront so he could send a dog by special transport! Alarm bells rang, we did not proceed. Finally I found an ad for a Husky puppy located a six hour drive away on the border with Romania. Eric and a very excited Raphael made the long trip to pick up our new pup!

I was shocked to discover when they returned home that the male dog they had intended to buy was actually female! Nevertheless she was the cutest puppy I had ever seen. Understandably she was incredibly nervous and withdrawn for the first weeks but soon became accustomed to her new surroundings. A slight issue was that she had only been spoken too in Hungarian. We tried everything to train her to be obedient, in English, but with very little success. Eventually she adapted to her new language but we still have obedience problems to this day!

Four months old

Haley lives outside, in a kennel with a run and access to our huge garden. She is allowed inside as long as she is not wet! Haley is smart, loving and loyal. Her “boss” is Eric and with his stern voice will usually do as she is told.

Having a dog is a HUGE commitment and initially was a massive learning curve for us all. We have never been dog-owners but now would certainly be lost without her.
